Nutritional Labelling: Impact on Cafes & Food Outlets.
Cafes & food outlets will shortly need to be prepared for a radical change in Food Labelling laws. Both the NSW and Victorian Governments have passed legislation making the provision of nutritional information online & at point of sale compulsory.
NSW initiative:
From 1st February 2011, laws in NSW will require all food outlets (including cafes, restaurants, fast-food chains, coffee-shops etc) with > 20 outlets in NSW or > 50 outlets across Australia to follow the new legislation.
Requirements:
•Clearly & legibly place the kilojoule content on menu boards (on printed boards/leaflets/posters, or electronic media). This is calculated using the average energy content of each standard food item, not using the per 100g measures. Therefore serving sizes will require different labels (eg small vs medium vs large servings).
•Predominantly feature the average adult daily energy intake of 8,700 kilojoules
•The kilojoule content must be adjacent to the price of the product and be of at least the same size. (this also applies to individual price tags or labels. Kilojoules must be near or close by the price of the product & all kilojoules must be advertised in the one place ie not across the other side of the food outlet. This includes drive-through facilities. Kilojoules must be either in the same font, or at least the same size as the price. Kilojoules may be rounded to the nearest 10kj.)
•Does not apply to pre-packaged foods, nor does it apply to foods prepared in-house for consumption within the premises (ie sit-down restaurant) & is therefore more applicable at this stage to take-away foods.
•Exempt outlets: Convenience Stores, service stations, food catering services, food businesses who sell food to be consumed on premises.
•Exempt foods: Nuts in their shell, raw fruit & vegetables meant to be washed & prepared by the consumer.
•Fines for non-compliance: $880 - $1,760.
VIC initiative:
The Victorian Government has announced a Menu Kilojoule Disclosure Scheme. Commencing in 2012, food service businesses with 200+ outlets across Australia or 50+ outlets across Victoria will need to comply with providing Nutritional Labelling to consumers of all food & drink items offered for sale. This will include disclosure on menus, menu boards & food tags. This will also include a statement about the recommended average daily adult energy intake on menus and menu boards.
In both states outlets will have 12 months with which to comply.
Both Governments have stated that if the initiative is successful, they will pursue smaller outlets, as well as further targeting & limiting saturated fat & sodium levels in foods purchased.
Options for food outlets & coffee shops:
1.Wait for legislation to enforce individual cafes, coffee shops, restaurants & food-chains to comply.
2.Act now to initiate food analysis of all or some of your more healthier food items. Research shows that 86% of consumers would prefer to know the nutritional content of fast-food & dining out options.
3.Use this as a marketing tool to show consumers you value their choices.
4.Show you have nothing to hide & stand by the nutritional content of your food.
